The Midnight Sun Game

The Midnight Sun Game.

Today I’m excited to tell you about a wonderfully unique human experience, The Midnight Sun Game.

Let’s start with a bit of background! Fairbanks, Alaska is known as the land of the midnight sun. From late April until late August, there are endless summer days, with some people making the most of the sunshine in the middle of the night by gardening, hiking, golfing or participating in other fun activities. These days of continuous, pure sunlight can be 24/7 for around 70 days. The longest day of the year is the summer solstice, 21st June (today!)

Since 1906, in Fairbanks Alaska a game of amateur baseball has been played on the summer solstice; The Midnight Sun Game.

Over the decades, this has built up to become quite the event and despite it being an amateur game, many famous players have taken part.

What has this got to do with Gamification and Business Kimba?

Is this going to be a wanky Linkedin style segue? Yeah…but I love a story – segue – business lesson so I’m gonna roll with it.

The Midnight Sun Game is a unique experience. It has become a part of the culture of Fairbanks. They aren’t trying to copy the style of anywhere else, they are successfully running an event that works with the resources they have available to them, in a way that works for their community.

In the online space, I see course creators, membership owners, and all sorts of different businesses launching, marketing and creating things by replicating what others have done. With the mindset of ….”They have been successful, so it has to work for me too, right?!”

So their membership looks like all the other memberships, their course looks the same as all the other courses, or they copy other people’s online summit or social media posts without considering their own resources (skills, personality, experience) or their community’s particular wants and needs.

This leads to a lot of disappointment when they don’t see the success that they expected. Resulting in feeling inadequate, like an imposter and asking yourself questions such as:

"Why did their launch achieve £75,000 and I only sold 5 spaces at £197 each?"
"What did I do wrong?"
"Maybe I’m not good enough?"

And on and on and on.

The trick they are missing is personalisation and novelty; two core gamification techniques.

You need to make whatever it is you’re doing completely bespoke to the audience you serve and bring to the table the unique talents you have; so that it has that rare ‘midnight sun game’ flavour.

This is why before my 1:1 gamification half-day sessions, I get my clients to send out a survey to their audience. Then we can gamify the membership, course or launch with full knowledge of the types of people in the audience, what they like and don’t and what will motivate them to take action.

During the 1:1 session, I find out as much as I can about what makes my client special, so we can sprinkle that magic into the project too!

If you’d like my brain on your membership, course or launch to improve results for you and your audience then you need one of my 1:1 gamification half-day sessions.

There’s no fancy sales page or email sequence. It’s a… read the Google doc and message me if you’re interested kinda deal.
